Barrington Court (Ilminster, United Kingdom)

Barrington Court at Barrington, near Ilminster, is a former Tudor manor house dating from the 16th century. It was the first country house acquired by the National Trust, in 1907, when it was derelict and used for housing farm animals. It was restored in the 1920s and the interior can be visited although it is now unfurnished. The formal gardens were laid out to designs by Gertrude Jekyll, also in the 1920s, and the kitchen garden provides produce for the restaurant. The outbuildings house a pottery and wood carvery. Although the 16th and 17th century owners were families of wealth, which the elaborate buildings reflect, later occupiers had less good fortune. It became a tenant farm and was damaged by a fire in the 19th century. Little is known about the later families, although all have left their mark in various features around the property.
