The National Portrait Gallery was created in 1856 to house a collection of portraits of famous British men and women. Since then it has expanded its remit to include photographs and other images as well. In 2005 the museum received over one and a half million visitors to see its collection of the great and the good, the bad and the misunderstood covering the period from the time of Henry VIII right up to modern times. In addition to the famous faces, the NPG holds a portrait competition every summer for unknown faces which draws work from some of the best portrait artists in the UK and further afield. The gallery houses both permanent and temporary exhibitions, this year including such topical subjects as slavery in portraiture (to mark the The National Portrait Gallery is located in London’s tourist centre - opposite the church of St Martin in the Fields, around the corner from Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery and a stone’s throw from Leicester Square. It can be accessed from Leicester Square or Charing Cross Underground stations. Admission is free and the museum opening hours are from 10 am to 6 pm daily with late opening until 9 pm on Thursdays and Fridays. There is a cafe and a roof-top restaurant.
