One Pillar Pagoda (Hanoi, Vietnam)

Die Ein-Säulen-Pagode ist nur 3m groß und wird tatsächlich nur von einer einzigen Säule getragen, die mitten aus einem See ragt. Dennoch hat dieses kleine Bauwerk aus dem 11. Jahrhundert große Bedeutung und gehört zu den Wahrzeichen Hanois. Ihre Form soll an eine Lotusblume erinnern, dem buddhistischen Symbol für Erleuchtung. Eine Legende erzählt, dass das Quan Am Heiligtum aufgrund eines Traumes von König Ly Thai Tong erbaut wurde. Dieser träumte, Quan Am habe ihn eingeladen, mit ihr auf einem Lotusthron zu sitzen. Die Berater des Königs sahen darin ein schlechtes Omen. Um Quan Am zu besänftigen und dem König ein langes glückliches Leben zu garantieren, sollte er eine Pagode in Form einer Lotusblume bauen. Dies ist allerdings nur eine von unzähligen Volkssagen um diesen Tempel. Die Säule wurde 1954 nach ihrer Zerstörung durch die Franzosen durch einen Betonfuß ersetzt.
