Hao Lo Prison (Hanoi, Vietnam)

Hao Lo Prison is more widely known by the nickname given to it by some of its residents during the Vietnam War who ironically called it the Hanoi Hilton. The prison was built in 1896 by the French colonialists who used it to torture and incarcerate political prisoners. The Vietnamese then took control in 1954 and later used it as a detention centre for Prisoners of War including Senator John McCain. Visitors will find a wide range of gruesome and disturbing exhibits including cells too small to lie down in, stocks for immobilising prisoners, and the guillotine in the courtyard. Opening hours are Tues-Sun 8-11:30am and 1:30-4:30pm and entrance fees are around 20 pence/25 euro cents. Hiring a guide is recommended.
