The New Town Hall was built between 1867and 1908 in a Flemish Gothic style to a design by 24-year-old Georg Hauberrisser. It covers an area of 9,159 square metres and has 400 rooms, the building is over 90 meters in length. There are stain glass windows and vaulted ceilings and a labyrinth-patterned floor in the inner courtyard. The entire basement of the building is a restaurant called the Ratskeller. The town hall tower which is 90 metres high houses the Carillon (Glockenspiel) where life sized figures on the clock give a performance for the crowds that gather in the Marienplatz below to watch. There are two different presentations one depicts a re-enactment of the 1568 wedding of Duke William V and Renate of Lorraine, complete with a jousting match and the other is a famous dance of Munich, the “Schäfflertanz”. The tower is open November to April: Monday to Friday from 10am until 5pm May to October: from 10am until 7pm. It is closed Saturdays and Sundays. Glockenspiel performances take place November to February: at 11am and 12 midday March to October: 11am, midday and 5pm. There are no performances on Good Friday.
