Passion Play (Oberammergau, Germany)

The Passion Play in Oberammergau is performed every ten years, with the next performance in 2020. Its origins go back to 1633, after the Thirty Years War and the Black Death had ravaged the community and the surviving citizens swore an oath to recreate Christ’s suffering and death every ten years. Such passion plays were common in the area at the time, but Oberammergau’s is unique in that the tradition has continued for nearly four centuries. It has not been an unbroken tradition: in the 18th century passion plays were prohibited, and the text and emphasis has changed many times. The 2010 performance was the 41st in the series and there have been some special performances in between the decades, such as in 1934 to celebrate the 300th anniversary. Around 2000 people are involved in the production, about half the village’s population. The play is staged between May and October and in 2010 there were 102 performances, five days a week. Each performance lasts five hours, with a three hour break. Since 1890 the Play has been staged in a purpose-built theatre, enlarged and modernised, which holds 4700 people. It attracts an audience from all over the world.
