Handa Island Reserve (Handa Island, United Kingdom)

This island, in the care of the Scottish Wildlife Trust, is home to one of the largest bird colonies in Europe. Around 200,000 seabirds nest in its cliffs in the breeding season (summer) with species such as great and arctic skuas, puffins and kittiwakes. The Great Stack is a particularly good place to observe the birds The island was inhabited until 1847, when the last 60 inhabitants were evacuated to Nova Scotia when the island was hit by a potato famine. The archaeological remains of their village are still there to be seen. There is a circular path around the island of about 6 km, which visitors are asked to stick to lest they disturb the wildlife. Access to the island is by ferry from Tarbert.
