Accommodations in Inverness near Inverness Castle (Inverness, United Kingdom)

Inverness Castle (Inverness, United Kingdom)

The first castle on the site was built in the 11th century of earth and timber. This was the setting for Macbeth’s murder of Duncan in the Shakespeare play and it is said that the ghost of Duncan still stalks the river bank below. Destroyed by Robert the Bruce, it was replaced by a stone-built castle in the 16th century which in its turn was destroyed by Bonnie Prince Charlie during the Jacobite Rebellion in 1745. All that remains are a curtain wall and a well. The current building was built in the 19th century to house County Hall and law courts. The Drum Tower has an interactive display about the 18th century Hannoverian Army. It is open daily 9.30am to 5.30pm from March to October. From June to September a piper plays on Castle Hill from 7pm to 7.30pm.
