Faubourg Marigny (New Orleans, USA)

Faubourg Marigny is a district of the city of New-Orleans. Located near the French Quarter, it started growing at the beginning of the XIXth century, under the influence and on the land of Bernard Xavier Philippe de Marigny de Mandeville, a rich and eccentric landowner. The first part to be built was the one nearest the Mississippi river. The more recent part of the Faubourg, known as “New Marigny”, was mainly populated by the coloured mistresses of white creole men, and their children. This was known as “plaçage”, and the relationships were referred to as “marriages de la main gauche”, left-handed marriages. Mostly spared by hurricane Katrina, it contains many different styles of creole architecture, and is known for its live music clubs, particularly along Frenchmen Street. Marigny is also one of the places where visitors can enjoy the Mardi-Gras celebrations.
