Devils Postpile National Monument (Mammoth Lakes, USA)

The main attraction of this national park consists of basalt columns that have been shaped from cooled and cracked lava and are 40 to 60 ft high. The view of the upright columns resembles organ pipes and they are regarded as one of the worlds finest examples of columnar basalt and have been declared a National Monument in 1911. The park further offers the 101ft high Rainbow Falls, which were named for the rainbows that are formed in their mist. Hikers might like to know that parts of the John Muir and Pacific Crest Trails pass through the park and, as 90% of the park is designated wilderness, it also offers a lot for bird watchers. Unlike in other National Parks in the US, it is not possible to get around with your own car / motorbike in the Devils Postpile. In order to preserve the pristine condition of the park and to keep disturbance of the wildlife to a minimum, they operate their own bus shuttle service. These buses will take visitors to all the attractions in the park. They run every 20-30 min from the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area Gondola Building. The only exception are overnight guests to the campingsite in the park and vistors who can provide a proof of physical disability. Also exempt are visitors who bring a small watercraft for use on the lakes. Opening times : Due to the weather conditions in the area the park is only open seasonally. It opens in mid-June and closes on 1. November at the latest , often earlier.
