Manzanar National Historic Site (Independence, USA)

The Manzanar National Historic Site near Independence, California is a former American-Japanese camp where over 110,000 men, women and children were held during the Second World War. It is one of ten such camps but this was recognised as being the best preserved, which is why the National Park Service designated it as a Historic Site in 1992. The site consists of military style camps spread out over a 814 acre site (329 hectares). The land was originally inhabited by Native Americans who cultivated apple orchards, which gave the area its name as Manzamar means “apple orchard” in Spanish. The Manzanar National Historic Site lies about 230 miles (370 kilometres) to the south of Los Angeles. It is situated in Owen’s Valley at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The site receives almost 100,000 visitors per annum.
