Berlin Television Tower (Berlin, Germany)
The Berlin Television Tower is a relic of the Cold War. Built by the government of the former East Germany, it was completed in 1969 and stands in the middle of what was East Berlin. Although the main purpose of the tall, graceful tower was to serve as a powerful transmitter, it became a proud symbol of socialism. After German unification in 1989, the tower’s interior was renovated and it became a major tourist attraction. Visitors may choose to view Berlin from the Observation Deck (at 203.78 m) or to dine in the upscale Tele-Café (at 207.53 m). Transportation up and down the tower is provided by two high-speed elevators. Admission fees for the Berlin Television Tower are provided on the official Web site, as are sample menus for the restaurant. Note that those planning to dine in the restaurant must also pay admission to enter the tower.
