Zoologischer Garten (Berlin, Germany)

The Zoo of Berlin, the oldest one in Germany is located a short distance from the train-station Zoologischer Garten. It opened for the first time on August 1st, 1844. Recently the zoo attracted the attention of people worldwide by the birth of a polar bear called Knut, which was raised to celebrity status until the death of its keeper Thomas Dörflein, who raised the little animal, which was rejected by his mother at birth. It is said to be the biggest zoo in the world, with about 15,000 animals and more than 1,400 different species. In the aquarium, which was built in 1913, visitors can find the greatest bio-diversity of all aquariums in the world with over 9,000 animals on three storeys. There are three locations within the complex to eat or drink either indoors or outside. Fees for admission to the zoo and / or the aquarium along with the opening times can be checked on the homepage.
