Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche (Berlin, Germany)

The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is one of Berlin’s landmarks, a protestant church and war memorial located at Breitscheidplatz, on Kurfürstendamm, the center of the former West-Berlin. The church was built by order of Emperor Wilhelm II in honour of his grandfather Emperor Wilhelm I, the foundation stone of the building was laid on the birthday of Emperor Wilhelm I on 22.03.1891.The old church was also seen as a symbol of the unity between throne and church in Prussia. The old Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was designed by Franz Schwechten in a neo-Romanesque style with a 113 metres high spire. During air raids in 1943 the church was badly damaged and almost completely destroyed in 1945, only part of its west tower survived. The ruins of the tower are incorporated in the new church which has been erected on the site since. An octagonal church with a foyer and tower with chapel was built alongside the damaged existing tower, which has become symbolic and a reminder of the destruction caused by war. A hall of remembrance is located at the old tower. Opening hours: Daily from 9am to 7pm Guided tours are available
