Many guests are thrilled to discover the quirky features of the hotel and escape from the monotony of chain hotels. They love a nice quiet wander around the gardens and the quaint village of Great Chesterford. They also like it for being a tranquil base to discover the region or visit Cambridge.
The staff are considered very friendly, yet professional and not intrusive. They are friendly and knowledgeable about the menus and welcoming. Just as you would expect, but not always obtain, from this type of establishment.
The breakfast has pretty rave reviews. Often cooked to order, except in busy periods, it is nicely cooked and plentiful.
Although the hotel plays on its tradition, many feel it is starting to look neglected and in need of some tender loving care. Many feel its best days are behind it and it is looking faded or tired and tatty. The hotel do insist though that the rooms are in the process of being refreshed and updated.
Although many guests appreciate the home-cooked food, some feel disappointed and that the food is not as good as made out. Some seem to expect more for its AA rosette and the corresponding prices. The dishes are considered as basic or not very sophisticated by some.
As with many establishments of this type, weddings or functions can annoy other regular guests. Thin walls are another culprit and the noise from the road another. However, for the majority of the guests this is not an issue. Weddings and groups can also have other negative impacts on guests. Dinners are not served to regular guests and the quality of breakfasts can suffer too as they are laid out in buffet format instead of cooked to order.
