St Andrew's Earls Colne (Wakes Colne, United Kingdom)
The Church of St Andrew’s in Earls Colne dates back to the 11th century. This early church has entirely vanished and the existing property was built in thebeginning of the 13th century by the de Vere family. They had come to England with William the Conqueror and had founded several small settlements along the Colne River, all of them with churches dedicated to the same patron saint. Although the oldest parts of the existing church go back to 1313 its high church tower was not erected before 1534. The tower was built for John de Vere, the seventh Earl of Oxford, whose coat of arms included the star and the boar sign which can still be seen on the battlements of the church tower and several old buildings along the High Street of Earls Colne. There is no entrance fee but the church welcomes donations.
