Wrest Park (Silsoe, United Kingdom)

Wrest Park is a country estate in Silsoe which consists of a Grade I listed mansion and gardens. It was the seat of the de Grey family from the 13th century until the last baron was killed in 1917. For most of the 20th century it changed ownership and while the house was used the grounds fell into disrepair. It was acquired by English Heritage in 2006 and although restoration is on-going it opened its new facilities to the public in 2011. Wrest Park is of particular interest for its 90 acres of woodlands and gardens. They reflect the development of garden design over 300 years, with both formal and informal styles. The Italian and rose gardens have been restored and the French parterre, American garden and woodlands are being restored. The house dates from the 18th century and is in French chateau style. The library, state rooms, countess’s sitting room and conservatory can be visited, although parts of the house are still used by other organisations. There is a visitor centre displaying the history and restoration of the property. The site has a car park, café, children’s play area, shop and facilities for disabled visitors.
