Town Hall (Antwerp, Belgium)

This building was designed by Cornelis Floris de Vriendt and built between 1561 and 1564. It was damaged in a great fire in 1576 and only the outer walls were left standing. It was rebuilt after 1579 and in 1882-1891 the interior was completely changed. The facade is a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance styles and is decorated with the statues of the Virgin , Justice and Prudence. The 45 doors on the ground floor were originally shops and the rent from these was used to finance the construction of the building. Inside the rooms there are some painting by Hendrik Leys illustrating the History of Antwerp (19th century). The building has been on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1999. Opening hours: Mondays 09:00-12:00: from Tuesday until Friday 09:00-15:00; Saturdays 12:00-16:00. Closed on Sundays.
