Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal (Antwerp, Belgium)

It is the largest Gothic church in the Low Countries and it was begun in 1352 to replace a Romanesque church built in the 12th century. The choir and nave were built first between 1352 and 1411 while the west front was built between 1422 and 1474. The central nave is flanked by three aisles on each side, with 48 pillars in each aisle. The cathedral has a length of 117m and a depth of 65m and an interior height of 40 meters. Among the masterpieces in the interior we can find some wall paintings of the 15th century, the statue of ““Our Lady of Antwerp””, four masterpieces by Rubens, a tabernacle in the form of the Ark of the Covenant and 34 stained windows. The belfry tower was finished in 1518 and is the tallest building in the city with its 123 metres. It has a carillon with 47 bells and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. Visiting hours: from Monday until Friday 10:00-17:00; Saturdays 10:00-15:00; Sundays and public holidays 13:00-16:00. Entrance fee: 4,00€; children under 12 free.
