Queen Elizabeth II Bridge (Dartford, United Kingdom)

The Queen Elizabeth II Bridge spans the Thames from just outside Dartford on the south bank to west of Thurrock on the Essex side. It is the lowest bridging point on the river. It carries the southbound traffic of the M25 London Orbital motorway, the northbound traffic using tunnels. The whole complex is known as the Dartford Crossing. Originally there was a single tunnel, with one lane in each direction, then increased traffic necessitated a second tunnel, completed in 1980. The M25 brought significantly higher vehicle numbers and the bridge was opened in 1991. It takes 4 lanes southbound while the two tunnels each take two lanes northbound. At its completion it was the largest cable-supported bridge in Europe. It is just over 800 metres in length, 450 metres between the two main towers and almost 60 metres above the river. A crossing toll is levied, collected on the Dartford side. It is recognised as one of the busiest crossings in Europe, carrying about 150,000 vehicles a day. High winds can mean the bridge has to close, and although traffic can be rerouted through the tunnels considerable build-ups can result.
