Fort Caroline National Memorial (Jacksonville, USA)

The Fort Caroline National Memorial in Jacksonville commemorates the first French colony in what is now the United States. Settled in 1564 by French Huguenots, the colony stuggled to cope with the native presence, the unfamiliar coastal ecology, the Spanish, religious conflict, and famine. By the end of 1567, it was largely abandoned. The Fort Caroline memorial is part of the larger Timucuan Ecological and Historic National Preserve, which also includes the Kingsley Plantation. Its focus on the French colonization effort is part of Timucuan’s effort to explore how the coastal wetlands have been affected by human habitation. Points of interest for Fort Caroline include a replica of the fort, the Ribault Memorial (honoring the colony’s founder), and Spanish Pond. The visitor center for Timucuan is also located at Fort Caroline. The site is open to the public year-round, and admission is free.
