Elephanta Caves (Mumbai, India)

Elephanta Island lies 10 km away from the city of Mumbai and can be reached by public ferries departing from a jetty close to the Gate of India. The Elephanta caves are home to rock cut temples that date to the 5th century BC and are Hindu in origin with images of the god Shiva. The total area of the caves is 60,000 square feet covering 7 different caves, the most important of which is the Mahesha Murti cave. There is also a cave temple on a hill which is reached by climbing 100 steps to reach a high hall supported by pillars. The caves are a UNESCO World Heritage site and were inscribed on the list in 1987. They are open Tuesday to Sunday from 9.00 to 17.00. Visitors are advised not to visit during the monsoon season when conditions can be dangerous.
