Marine Drive (Mumbai, India)

Marine Drive in Mumbai also goes by the more prosaic historic nickname of ‘the Queens Necklace’ due to the strings of lights that illuminate the road at night. Today it’s officially called Nataji Subhash Chandra Road but everyone still knows it as Marine Drive. As the name implies, Marine Drive is a road that runs close to the sea, in this case from Malabar Hill to Nariman Point. The land on which it stands was reclaimed from the sea in the early 20th Century. The beach which runs beside the road and is separated from it by the promenade is called Chowpatty Beach and is one of Mumbai’s most popular beaches. Marine Drive is home to many international hotels as well as Art Deco inspired buildings from the 1930s and 1940s. It’s a popular location for promenading families, courting couples and people jogging or walking.
