Courtney Campbell Causeway (Tampa, USA)

Tampa Bay is Florida’s largest tidal estuary, measuring nearly 400 square miles. Old Tampa Bay is the northern extension which separates the peninsulas of South Tampa from Pinellas County. The northern-most of the three highways which cross Old Tampa Bay, the Courtney Campbell Causeway, carries State Route 60 between Tampa and Clearwater. Completed in 1934 it was constructed by dredging and in-filling from either bank and linked by bridges over two navigation channels. The area has been landscaped and has been designated of special significance by several authorities. It is a haven for many species of birds, mammals (including manatees) and rare subtropical plants. It provides breeding grounds for young fish, crab and shrimp. There are panoramic views across the bay and coastline towards the distant cityscapes and spectacular sunsets to the west. The south side of the causeway has been designated a pedestrian walkway and cycle track. The Ben T. Davis Municipal Beach is at the Tampa end and has picnic tables and a small car park. There is a similar public beach at the western end. Public boat ramps allow access for fishing and other water activities. The Courtney Campbell Causeway received Florida Scenic Highway designation status in 2005. Access: Open continually, no charges
