Bryant Park (New York, USA)

Bryant Park is situated a few blocks east of Times Square. It has had a colourful history was once a graveyard for the poor and a military excercise area during the civil war. It gained a reputation as a no-go area in the 1970s, but a major redevelopment took place and the park reopened in 1992. The park only covers a 4 acre plot and backs on to the New York City Public Library. There is also a lawn area where many office workers enjoy a picnic lunch during the hot weather. There are a number of restuarants and cafes with outside dining under the shade of the trees. Activities in Bryant Park include chess & backgammon and there is an outdoor reading room. Bryant Park is a WiFi Hot Spot, bringing the internet free to users. During winter there is a skating rink and this is free. There is a Carousel in the mid-park area on the 40th Street side which is open daily from 11:00am to 7:00pm.
