911 Memorial (New York, USA)

Ground Zero is the name that was given to the site where the World Trade Center complex of New York City stood before it was destroyed during terror attacks. On the morning of September 11th, 2001 two hijacked planes were deliberately crashed into the two towers of the complex which collapsed within two hours of the incidents, killing almost 3000 people. All of the seven buildings of the complex were destroyed on that day, the original World Trade Center collapsed around 10 hours the initial attack. Construction work for a memorial which is expected to open on the 10 year anniversary of the attacks is under way. It will include a 6 acre plaza which will feature 2 large pools situated on the footprints of the towers. Further there will be a museum of which the “Freedom Stairs” , the last remaining part of the original World Trade Centre, will be a part. Several new towers will also be built on the site, the most symbolic being the future “Freedom Tower” that will have the exact height of the former South Tower and, including antenna, will reach 1,776 ft, a number which refers to the year the Declaration of Independence 1776.
