Every year, on the first weekend of July, the medieval festival of Bayeux takes place for two days. The ancient streets surrounding the Norman Cathedral go back to earlier times with a number of street animations such as jugglers and troubadours, a street market offering items of days gone by and jousting knights. Ancient skills are also demonstrated by traditional craftsmen. Local cafes turn into taverns for the weekend and serve medieval food. The event usually attracts around 40 000 people.
