Stephansdom (Vienna, Austria)

The cathedral is one of Viennas landmarks, and like all the great European cathedrals it has a history of changes in style, unfinished work and some destruction. Begun in 1147 in the Romanesque style it was for a long time Europes’ tallest building at over 130 metres. In the 14th century Duke Rudolph IV of Habsburg ordered a complete rebuilding in the Gothic style to include the two famous towers: the south tower which for its height is rare in Gothic architecture, and the north tower which remained incomplete until finished in the renaissance style in the 16th century. There is also a great bell the Pummerin which is rung at New Year. The huge roof, with its multi-coloured tiles, was destroyed in WW2 but has now been restored. Inside are many art treasures and below are the catacombs. The cathedral is open to visitors from 6am to 10pm Monday to Saturday, and 7am to 10pm Sundays and public holidays. Tours are available for the church and the catacombs and there is an entrance fee for these. Both the north and south towers can be climbed by lift in the north tower, but by nearly 400 steps in the south tower. Again fees apply. For details of fees and tour times, consult the website.
