Prater (Vienna, Austria)

Prater is a public park in Vienna. The noble family called de Prato received the land from Emperor Friedrich I in 1162.In 1560 the land was bought by Emperor Maximilian II and it became a hunting ground. Later, Emperor Rudof II discontinued the entry to the land due to a problem with poachers. The Emperor Joseph II declared the area as a free public park on April 7 1766. The Wurstelprater started after the announcement and brought in cafes and coffee houses. The hunting activities carried on until 1920. Renovations on the Wurstelprater started in 2004 and the new underground service started on May 2008. The size of the park has been condensed by the building of Ernst Happel Stadion.
