Sóller Railway (Palma de Majorca, Spain)

The Soller Railway dates from the early part of the 20th century. Work began on its construction in 1911 funded by the profits from the orange and lemon trade, it was completed in 1912. The narrow gauge track runs for 27 kilometres and links Palma de Mallorca with Soller. Starting in the plains it moves into the mountains and through 13 tunnels of the Serra de Tramutana before reaching the valley and its destination. The 19th century train is powered by an electric locomotive and takes one hour to complete its journey. Tickets cost 10 euro single and 17 euro return. The journey is noted for being very scenic and during the months of February and March almond blossom and orange and lemon trees full of fruit can be seen from the train.
