Royal Thimphu Golf Course (Thimphu, Bhutan)

The Royal Thimphu Golf Course is one of only seven golf courses in Bhutan and is the only one that’s open to the public. Located in the capital city of Thimphu, the golf course is close to the Trashichhoe Dzong and the National Assembly and is built on almost flat land in the Wang Chhu river valley. Golf is a minority sport in Bhutan and was introduced in the 1970s by an Indian army officer who persuaded the king to let him build a nine-hole course in Thimphu. Growth in popularity led to there being approximately 100 golfers in Bhutan by the year 2000. The Royal Thimphu has nine holes and is a par 34, 2800 yard course. Approximately 10 tournaments are staged at the club each year including the Bhutan Open, the Druk Air Championship and the Yak Open.
