Chowrasta (Darjeeling, India)

Chowrasta is an open square at the centre of Darjeeling at the point where four pedestrian-only roads all meet. The name Chowrasta is a local word meaning ‘where four roads meet’ and is a key place for locals and tourists to promenade, do a bit of shopping or simply sit and watch the world pass by. At one end of the plaza is an ornamental fountain and at the other is a statue to a local dignitary which stands at the foot of Observatory Hill. Chowrasta offers panoramic views to either side. Chowrasta has many small shops and cafes around its perimeter as well as a tourist office and public toilets. Close to Chowrasta visitors will also find the ‘pony stand’ where the ponies which give rides to tourists are stabled. Public meetings and celebrations typically centre on Chowrasta.
