Drukgyel Dzong (Paro, Bhutan)

Drukgyel Dzong was built in 1644 and was one of many 17th century dzongs (fortress-monasteries) in Bhutan. It was built to commemorate victory over an invasion force from Tibet and was commissioned by Zhabdung Ngawang Namgyal in a location of strategic importance for the protection of Paro Valley. In 1951, fire from butter lamps in the temple got out of control and the dzong was very badly damaged. Today only the ruins remain. The dzong is located on a high point on a hillside over-looking a valley of terraced paddy fields. Visitors can drive to the base of the hill where there is a small parking area, and then climb up the hill to examine the ruins and take in the scenery. No admission fees are charged and no visiting permits are required. Drukgyel Dzong is also the traditional starting point for treks to Mount Jhumolhari which is approximately 3 days walk from the dzong.
