Quaint but quirky, Preston is one of the up-and-coming areas of Melbourne. Once nicknamed “DePreston” due to its relatively gentrified nature, the city is proving to be anything but.
Currently, all kinds of people are flocking to the area, from young professionals to families to artists. Preston is currently considered a rather multicultural and eclectic community and continues to attract people from all over the city. The suburb is situated just ten kilometres north of the Melbourne CBD, and offers excellent transportation links. From charming boutiques to the Northland Shopping Centre, Preston is a great place for shopping. New shops are popping up in the area all the time.
However, one of the highlights of the area is the Preston Market. Open most days of the week from Wednesday through Sunday, this is the place to go for great bargains and unique buys. Locals love it for fresh, locally sourced produce, clothing and homeware. You can find just about anything here. Keep in mind that the busiest day is Saturday, so it’s best to get there early. However, any day of the week is worth visiting.
Preston is a Favourite Destination for Foodies
Preston presents a rapidly growing restaurant scene. From hip bars to fine restaurants, the city offers lots of variety for eateries. If you’re a foodie, there are plenty of places to explore.
For fans of Asian cuisine, the High Street is home to many Asian restaurants, especially ones specialising in Vietnamese food. The High Street is also where many new venues are opening their doors, so expect a good mix of menus to choose from.
Although now only a pub and popular sports bar, the Preston Hotel used to be one of the original five Preston-area hotels. It is a cosy spot for a drink and and comfort food, and popular with locals.
The Many Parks of Preston Make it an Active Community
You’ll find lots of green space throughout the city. However, one of the local favourites is the Merri Creek trail, which runs about 21 kilometres long. When you’re tired of all the shopping and dining, this is a great spot to burn off the calories.
You’ll Find Less-Pricey Accommodation in Preston
Preston accommodation tends to be more wallet-friendly, despite the rising housing prices in the area. Although there are hotels and serviced apartments within the district, there are many motels. Bell Motel and St Georges Motor Inn are two well-equipped options in Preston. In addition to basic kitchenette facilities in the room, both options offer travel-friendly amenities such as a self-service laundry.
Because Preston is quite convenient to central Melbourne, it is a functional choice for a place to stay. You’re sure to find something you love.
