The memorial was erected in 1822 in memory of Henry Dundas, the Viscount Melville who was in politics for four decades. He held such posts are Lord Advocate and Keeper of the Scottish Signet and Treasurer to the Navy. The monument was erected by the Royal Navy who also contributed to the cost of the monument. It stands in the middle of St Andrews Square and looks down George Street. It was designed by William Burn and advice about the foundations was given by Robert Louis Stevenson’s father Thomas.
