Jerónimos Monastery (Lisbon, Portugal)

The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is situated in Lisbon in the district of Belém. It was designated as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1983. It is one of the most distinctive Manueline churches in the world with an architectural style that mixes the colourful Gothic and Moorish influences with ingredients of the emerging renaissance. It was built to honour Vasco da Gama’s journey to India. The Church of Saint Maria has a carved stonework interior. It has a south portal and a western portal. The south portal is the main entrance to the monastery and was designed by Joao de Castilho. It is 32 meters in height and 12 meters wide. The western portal has the Gothic theme to Renaissance. Nicolau Chanterene had built it in 1517. It symbolized the Manueline architecture. The stone sculpture features a maritime theme.
