Gillette Castle State Park (East Haddam, USA)

Gillette Castle was built by William Hooker Gillette, an actor famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. He had the castle built to resemble a folly. The castle was purchased by the state of Connecticut and is now a state park open to the public. The cost to visit the house itself is $5 per adult and $2 per child. The grounds and the visitors centre are free of charge. There are hiking, picnicking and camping facilities as well as guided tours of the historic building.
