Accommodations in Milan near Teatro alla Scala (Milan, Italy)
Teatro alla Scala (Milan, Italy)
La Scala is one of the most famous opera houses in the world. It was first built in 1776 after fire destroyed the previous Teatro Regio Ducale. The church of Santa Maria della Scala was pulled down to make way for the new building but the name La Scala was preserved. World War 2 damage meant it had to be rebuilt, and further major refurbishment was undertaken between 2001 and 2004 to improve the acoustics, enlarge the backstage area and add an electronic libretto system. La Scala has seen many world famous premières and performances, and top opera singers perform here. The season begins each year on 7 December. All performances are timed to finish before midnight and late-comers are not allowed in. A feature of the theatre is the “loggione”, the cheapest seats in the top tier, where traditionally the fiercest criticism or acclaim of the performance can be heard. There is also a museum which houses items and reference information including a collection of over 120,000 books, instruments, portraits, busts and documents. Visitors can also see inside the theatre and back stage. For details of performance times, tickets and museum access see the website.
