Saint Isaac's Cathedral (St Petersburg, Russia)

Die Isaakskathedrale fällt schon von weitem durch ihre mächtige goldene Kuppel auf. 1858 wurde der Bau vollendet und war das letzte klassizistische Gebäude, das in Sankt Petersburg gebaut wurde. Die Fassade besteht aus 112 Granitsäulen und für die Kuppel wurde 100 kg Gold gebraucht. Die Kirche gehört zu den größten Kuppelbauten der Welt. 1928 wurde die Kirche verstaatlicht und 1931 als Museum eröffnet. Leider wurde sie während des 2. Weltkrieges stark beschädigt und mußte von 1947-1963 restauriert werden. Seit 2002 wird das Gebäude außen komplett renoviert. Der Innenraum fasst 10 000 Menschen. Heute finden dort wieder Gottesdienste statt. Öffnungszeiten: im Sommer: täglich, außer Mittwoch, von 10.00 - 20.00 Uhr im Winter: täglich, außer Mittwoch, von 11.00 - 19.00 Uhr
