Pennsylvania Avenue (Washington D.C., USA)

Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington links some of the city’s, and the nation’s, most important institutions. Known as ‘America’s Main Street,’ it is the thoroughfare that carries presidents from their inaugural ceremonies at the Capitol to their home at the White House. It provides the route for the funeral processions of national leaders. And it is prime space for demonstrations, parades, and a variety of marathon-type events. Pennsylvania Avenue was laid out in the original plans for the city in 1791 by Pierre L’Enfant and was always intended as a grand and imposing–as well as a functional–space. The National Archives, the J. Edgar Hoover FBI Building, Lafayette Park, the Departments of Justice and Treasury, and the Navy Memorial are among the many landmarks and institutions that boast Pennsylvania Avenue addresses. As a national historic site, Pennyslvania Avenue is administered with other nearby sites by the National Mall and Memorial Parks. It does not have separate visitor facilities, though several other elements of the complex provide visitor centers, toilet facilities, dining rooms, and gift shops. It is served by several links to the Metro bus and subway system.
