Muirfield (Gullane, United Kingdom)
The Muirfield golf club in Gullane is self-defined as the “Home of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers.” The Company was founded in 1744 and is one of the world’s oldest (and still all-male) golf clubs. It has a internationally famous championship course, and it claims a special place in the history of the Open Championship. Muirfield is a links-style course located on the southern bank of the Firth of Forth. The course architecture was designed by Old Tom Morris, and it hosted its first Open in 1892, the first of fifteen. The clubhouse is a half-timbered Elizabethan-style structure. Also built in 1891, it was designed by member Hall Blyth and has been greatly enhanced and expanded in the intervening years. The club welcomes visitors on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Men and women meeting a minimum handicap may contact the club for permission to play. Visitors are advised that restrictions regarding appropriate dress and access remain in place for the clubhouse.
