Mauthausen Memorial (Mauthausen, Austria)

Mauthausen and Gusen I were both considered to be “Grade III”-camps i.e intended for maximum security. Prisoners, including a large Polish and Spanish contingent, had to labour in the local granite quarry and by 1941 Mauthausen had its own gas chamber. Constructed in 1938 as a labour camp and high security prison for POWs, Jews and political prisoners, the concentration camp at Mauthausen was the HQ for several subordinate camps which housed a total of approximately 85,000 inmates when it was liberated in 1945. The camp has been partially restored and is freely open to the public, whilst the museum on site has an entrance fee of 2 Euro and is open between 09h00 and 17h30 daily. A self-guided tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and facilities include a bookshop in the former gate tower.
