Las Fallas (Valencia, Spain)

The Fallas is an exuberant fiesta which takes place in Valencia in March every year in honour of St Joseph. The theme of the fiesta could be said to be fire, fireworks and noise. Local neighbourhoods produce “ninots”, huge papier mâché models up to 20 feet high which are paraded through the streets; caricatures of politicians, sports stars, film stars or anyone of any renown. One of the highlights of the fiesta is when these models are stuffed full of fireworks and burned. Another highlight is the daily “mascleta” in the Plaza Ayuntiamento: neighbourhoods join together to try to produce the biggest, loudest firework display. The noise is so great that pregnant women are not allowed to attend. Mindful of health and safety, fire crews and ambulances abound. Attendance is free.
