Hippodrome of Constantinople (Istanbul, Turkey)

200 years before the birth of Christ, the sporting heart of Istanbul was the hippodrome - the site of chariot racing and athletic events. The area was built by the Roman Emperor Septimus Severus. Today the Hippodrome is represented by a strip of land between the Blue Mosque and the Museum of Turkish and Islamic arts. Main attractions include an Egyptian obelisk dating to the 16th Century BC, the Constantine Column, the Serpentine Column and the German Fountain. There are no entrance fees and visitors can view these at any time of the day or night.
