Spanning the Golden Horn, the Galata Bridge links modern Istanbul to the historic Constantinople region. Built in 1994 as a replacement for its four predecessors, the first of which dated from 1845, the Galata Bridge is a popular angling spot. The bridge offers a pedestrian walkway as well as tram lines and a three-lane road. It is also a famous landmark which features in many paintings and is often mentioned in Turkish literature.
