The Istanbul Mosaic Museum is tucked away in the bazaar behind the Blue Mosque and is housed in the remains of an old Byzantine palace. The mosaics are believed to have decorated the Great Palace of Constantinople and to have dated to the 6th century in the reign of Justinian the Great. The tiles are vibrant and colourful and displayed both on floors and walls. Hunting scenes and depictions of classical gods are common themes. The museum is open daily (except Tuesdays) between 9 am and 5.30 pm. There is a small entrance fee.
