Accommodations in Mechelen near Groot Begijnhof
Groot Begijnhof (Mechelen, Belgium)
The Great Beguinage was founded in 1286 after it was realised that the small Beguinage could not accommodate the large number of beguines. In 1578 all of the houses of the beguinage were burnt down and from then on the beguines were forced to live inside the city walls. In the early 1600’s the actual Great Beguinage was founded within the city walls. It features compact beguinage houses and convents, with picturesque inner yards and gardens behind small doors. The complex is bordered by Saint-Catherine Street, New Beggaardenstraat and Guido Gezelle Avenue. Today there are many activities that take place around here; including a flea market, some art exhibitions and the promotion of social contacts between the inhabitants of the area. It was listed, together with other 12 Flemish beguinages, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1998.
