The seaside getaway of Golden Beach in subtropical southern Queensland is a great family-friendly destination at any time of year. Slightly further afield, lovers of the great outdoors can explore unspoilt Australian landscapes or see koala bears at some of the many national parks around Golden Beach. In fact, the Sunshine Coast region hosts the highest concentration of national parks in Queensland. For a wild time, you could make the 25-minute car journey to Australia Zoo. Operated by the family of the late naturalist Steve Irwin, who was known as the “Crocodile Hunter”, it contains mammals, marsupials and, of course, crocodiles. About 35 minutes’ drive away, foodies will love the Ginger Factory at Yandina. Visitors can learn how ginger is grown, harvested and turned into tasty products, or ride around the grounds on a narrow-gauge railway.
Have a Whale of a Time in Golden Beach
Although Golden Beach makes a fine holiday destination all year round, it’s only during the southern hemisphere winter that one of the region’s natural wonders can be enjoyed. A whale watching cruise from Caloundra is undoubtedly one of the most memorable experiences you can have on a trip to Golden Beach. Between May and November humpback whales often frequent the waters off this part of Queensland, and there are several cruise companies offering boat tours to see these amazing mammals in the wild.

Caloundra and Golden Beach sit at the southern end of the sun-kissed Sunshine Coast region, which boasts masses of accommodation options about one hour’s drive north of Brisbane. Furthermore, getting to Golden Beach needn’t cause any headaches because it is served by Sunshine Coast Airport, which sits about 30 minutes’ drive away.
