Estadio Santiago Bernabéu (Madrid, Spain)

The Bernabeu is one of those stadiums whose name is as famous as its host team. The stadium dates from 1947 although it only acquired its current name in 1955, from Santiago Bernabeu the then President of Real Madrid. In 1953 a third amphitheatre was added, the “gallinero” (henhouse) which gave it a steep-sided look. In the 50s and 60s it housed crowds of up to 120,000 although many were standing on terracing. Since the introduction of all-seater legislation the capacity is 75,000. It was modernised for the World Cup finals held in Spain in 1982 when the façade and access were modernised and a partial roof added.
