Estación de Atocha (Madrid, Spain)

Atocha Station is Madrid’s largest railway station and serves train traffic arriving from the south of Spain. The first station on the site was opened in 1851 but was subsequently destroyed in a fire and the old part of station that stands today dates mostly to 1892. The requirements of a modern station became too much for the old Atocha building and in 1992 the old building was taken out of use and converted into a concourse with a tropical garden, lots of shops and cafes and even a nightclub. The functional aspects of the station were then housed in the modern terminal which is linked to two Madrid Metro stations. Atocha is perhaps best known internationally as the destination of the trains which were bombed on March 11th 2004. 191 people were killed and 1800 injured making the station a site of pilgrimage and memorial for visitors who come to pay their respects at the Atocha station memorial.
